bandit brings Biggest firefly festival to date

July 02, 2015 | Category: Print

DOVER, DELEWARE – More than 90,000 music lovers turned out for another weekend of music in The Woodlands at The Firefly Music Festival. Bandit Lites provided the festival lighting for the stages which featured performances by The Killers, Foster the People, Snoop Dogg, Paul McCartney, Morrissey, and Zedd.

“A part of The Killers’ look is the use of truss spots on either side of the stage, instead of having fixtures downstage,” said project manager Matt King. “For the rest of the bands, we needed to provide some downstage wash light. Dizzy Gosnell loaded a downstage truss with VL 3500 Washes to handle this task. Another addition that Diz made was to add fixtures above and below the video screens in the wings. This helped make the stage bigger and integrate the audience into the show.”

Equipment for the main stage included VL 2500 Spots, Bandit 5x5s, Clay Paky Sharpys, GRN 8 Lite, GRN Moving Washes, Martin Atomic 3000 Strobes, one GrandMA 1 full console and one GrandMA 1 Lite Console.

“The system for the Killers on Sunday night was based on the plot by Steve Douglas, their LD,” explained Dizzy. “Hardly any changes from his original spec were made, as the flown system covered all the bases for acts playing before the Killers. They also bought in their rear wall of lights and floor lights to give a massive look to the rig. The Killers are fast becoming a festival favorite for many, as they really can project out to 50-70,000 people standing in a field.”

The Killers performance was especially poignant for many fans, as it was their only official show of the year, and while the main stage may have closed down earlier in the evening, those looking to rock out until the wee morning hours found The Lawn and Backyard Stage.

“The systems for those stages were driven by speed and geography,” Gosnell added, saying, “Keeping lighting trusses out of the way of visiting scenic and video pieces for fast set changes is key. A lot of EDM acts play on these stages and like their video walls, so as to not lose lights for other acts during the day, we introduced rear lighting ladders that track on and offstage to better use the lights for all three days.”

Equipment for the supplemental stages included VL 2500 spots, Bandit 5x5s, Clay Paky Sharpys, GRN 8 Lites, GRN Par 64s, GRN Washes, GRN Moving Washes, Martin Atomic 3000 Strobes, a Grand MA 1 Full Console and a Grand MA 1 Lite console.
